Latest news about baby Elaina

Last Thursday, Elaina had another test that showed a host of messed up arteries and heart valves. I don't even know how to begin to explain it. She needs life-saving open-heart surgery. A top-notch team of cardiologists from the University and several area hospitals gathered together this morning to brainstorm a solution for baby Elaina. They were scheduled to meet with Mike and Hollie this afternoon, and I expect to hear the results of that meeting tonight.

Genetic testing came back positive for
DiGeorge syndrome. This condition often coincides with cleft palate, but Elaina does not have that. Of course, symptoms vary from child to child.

My mom drove out from Nebraska on Saturday, all alone, through 2 Wyoming blizzards, and is staying with Hollie for an as-yet-undetermined amount of time. She is enforcing much-needed therapeutic rest for Hollie, is making sure the family is well-fed, and is helping Ben graduate to his very own big-boy bed. (Bless her heart! That kid is more than twenty-five handfuls. I'm not kidding.)

Hollie told me last night that baby Elaina is perking up, is now able to open her eyes for extended periods of time and is adjusting to touch better (still no skin-to-skin allowed, though).

Just waiting for the call to see what happens next!
