Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road isRapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.
-- Bob Dylan, 1963

Tonight, we gather for freedom. I couldn't vote against Prop 8, but I still have a voice. My heart has been so broken over this, and the only way I'll heal it is to get involved in any small way I can find. There are many people I love who disagree with me. Some may be disappointed in me. Some may choose to break ties with me. But I have to stand up for what I believe in, honor my conscience and do what is right. I told a dear friend today that I would fight to the death to preserve his rights and protect his marriage, and I'm prepared to be disowned, blacklisted or shunned by friends, family, and even my church over it if I have to. As much as it kills me inside.
This is too important for me to just stand idly by.

I wish I was as poetic as you are my love. I just want to make it known that I have the same beliefs as the love of my life does, and feel the same way as she does. We will be there tonight, and will stand together.
ReplyDeleteWow, that last paragraph gave me chills! You are one strong lady. I wish I'd had that strength as a member. I just quietly voted no on Amendment 3 here in Utah and only briefly broached the subject with family and friends (just to be resoundingly smacked down). Things are so different for me now and I wish that what I said could be interpreted with full acceptance instead of sidelong suspicion of Anti-Mormon Propaganda (TM). You have such a voice and I am so, so impressed that you use it in this way.
